Karol Szymanowski (1882-1937), the greatest Polish composer besides Frederic Chopin, lived in the Atma villa between 1930 and 1935. In 1975-1976, the building was renovated and adapted for use as a museum. The villa is a typical example of a mountain boarding house. It was build ca. 1890 in the Zakopane style by Józef Kaspruś-Stoch. It houses the only biographical museum of Karol Szymanowski in the world. Since his childhood, the composer liked Zakopane, and settled at the foot of Giewont before his death, first in the Limba villa, then in Atma. Most of the museum exhibits are gifts from the artist’s niece, Krystyna Dąbrowska. The museum is located on the ground floor and presents basic information on the life and work of the composer, his relations with Zakopane and the Podhale folklore, as well as his personal belongings. The museum also houses a reconstructed study of Karol Szymanowski.
